Good Night Tips and Tricks
Posted on May 09 2023
Many people struggle with falling asleep or staying asleep. If you’re like me, your mind is too busy thinking about the day that just passed, the things you need to do tomorrow, and random insights that need to be discovered. Sometimes, these thoughts don’t settle. They just cycle over and over again, wasting precious time that is needed for rest and recuperation.
I’ve learned throughout the years a few different tricks to calm my thoughts enough for me to get a decent night sleep, so hopefully you find some gems to try if you also have difficulties getting to sleep.
Yoga/light exercise: I often start my winding down process with a gentle yoga session or a dog walk. I pick activities that give me time to process the events of my day or any insights that I've gathered. The key here is an activity that helps clear the mind more than exhausting the body, though any workout can be beneficial.
Wash the day away: Whether it is a shower, bath, or just washing your face, this cleansing act helps with any negative energy or emotions that stick to you. Bonus is using calming scents like lavender or chamomile.
Cup of tea: There are dozens of teas that can help with sleep. Chamomile and Valerian Root are two that I constantly go to for a deep night's rest, though if you aren't fond of tea, you can easily do a warm cup of milk and honey, or warm water with lemon and honey. The key here is again just something to calm and relax your mind and body.
Write down your woes or make a to-do list:
If your mind is racing with all the things you need to do or things that bothered you about the day, then write them down! I find a ten minute journaling session before bed actually helps me clear my mind, so I am not thinking about things that bother me or worrying about my to-do list. I can then focus on just relaxation and much-needed sleep.
Music or Meditations: I know many people who cannot fall asleep to talking. Any TV, meditation, or even song lyrics can keep them awake, so for those people, classical music or instrumental music is the best. Others love guided meditations to help relax and fall asleep. Many free streaming sites have focused meditations on letting the day go or releasing stress triggers. I am a combination of both; some nights I need just music, and some a meditation is the only way I can clear my mind enough to sleep.
Crystals: My final piece of advice is utilizing crystals. There are many that are super beneficial for sleep. You can either stick them beneath your pillow or on a table beside the bed so that their calming energy can help aid you in sleep. My top choices are Amethyst, Howlite, Lepidolite, Moonstone, and Sodalite. These stones help both with calming the mind, but they assist with dreams as well.
